Chapter 9 Conducting Experiments
Manipulating the Independent Variables
2 types:
1. Straightforward Manipulation
2. Stage Manipulation
Straightforward Manipulation
Using instructions and /or stimulus presentation
- Verbally; written forms; via video (or audio) tape; via computer
Mundane Realism is the extent to which the experimental situation/task is something that
participants might do in real life
- When IV manipulation mimics daily life e.g. reading job ads
Stage Manipulation
Stage event that occur during the experiment
2 reasons for using:
- To activate an psychology state (often a strong emotion)
- To stimulate a real-life situation
Example
- A distracted driving experiment:
Done in a driving stimulator – “passenger” (researcher accomplice) either
talks or not (IV)
- Would be too dangerous to do in real life
Example
- Asch’s famous study on “social conformity”
DV: % who would conform
IV: (1) when all accomplices “agreed” on wrong ans. (33%)
(2) when just 1 accomplices :disagreed”, subject agreement dropped to about 5%
Experimental Realism Experimental realism is the extent to which an experiment can involve
the participant and get them to behave in a way that it is meaningful to what you're doing
- When manipulation of IV activates a psychology process or behavior
- Easier to have experimental realism

When iv manipulation mimics daily life e. g. reading job ads. To activate an psychology state (often a strong emotion) Done in a driving stimulator passenger (researcher accomplice) either talks or not (iv) Would be too dangerous to do in real life. Iv: (1) when all accomplices agreed on wrong ans. (33%) (2) when just 1 accomplices :disagreed , subject agreement dropped to about 5% Experimental realism experimental realism is the extent to which an experiment can involve the participant and get them to behave in a way that it is meaningful to what you"re doing. When manipulation of iv activates a psychology process or behavior. Personal interactions may make it hard for others to replicate(repeat the exam in same situation), and. Complexity may make it hard to interpret cause-effect.
