Why do we follow rules that idenify very delayed consequences: although the reinforcer ideniied in a rule might be delayed for an individual, other people might provide immediate consequences if the person follows or doesn"t follow the rule. Situaions where rules are especially helpful: the addiion of reinforcement programs of instrucion in the form of rules will increase the efeciveness of the programs in the following situaions: Correct use of rules can produce behaviour change much more rapidly than trial and error experiences that involve reinforcement and exincion. When consequences that might be provided for a behaviour are too delayed to directly reinforce that behaviour.
