o|82  Through tht company (rather than with adults), learn to cooperate Learnig mutual respect in peer group, regarding each other as equals o Produces more ethical children than authoritative company of adults Freud Psychologist – father of psychoanalysis  Prolific writer – latter part was sociological Talked about stages of development o Psycho-sexual development (lead to socialization) Importance of social experience and biological maturity  Babies are fixated on mouth = oral Fixation moves to anus  Neither Durkheim nor Piaget would see socialization as stressful Freud would disagree  Socialization is one of the most stressful things that human beings will ever have to endure  Socialization involves restraining/repressing of impulses Innate drive 2 sides: Eros = compulsion for closeness, connection, love, sexual desire (libido) & Thantos = drive toward disengagement, disconnection, aggression, destruction, anger if drive/energy were released, wuld result in absolute chaos/anarchy occasionally we let it ‘slip’ o we all have to pay a price to have a civilization – repress the energy socialization = different ways we are taught to maintain control over that energy cannot contro
