KIN110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Auditory Cortex, Lentiform Nucleus, Caudate Nucleus
Document Summary
Sensory areas in the brain: primary somatosensory. In postcentral gyrus of parietal lobe (brodmann areas 1-3) Receives info from somatic sensory: visual areas: Primary visual cortex found in the posterior tip of the occipital lobe, has direct connections with the photoreceptors in the retina. Largest cortical area; contains map of visual space on retina (opposite). Visual association area surrounds pvc (post visual cortex). Interprets visual image based on prior experience eg. recognition of a face, letter (also movement!). If damaged, you could still see things, but you can"t interpret them: auditory areas: Primary auditory cortex sound evaluated by pitch, rhythm, loudness. Auditory association area interpretation based on memory speech, words, music, thunder, etc: vestibular (equilibrium) cortex: Awareness of balance posterior part of insula and adjacent parietal cortex: olfactory cortex: Medial aspects of temporal lobes = uncus. Small in humans; most of surrounding tissue now forms limbic system (emotions, memory) Conscious awareness of different odors: gustatory cortex:
