ACB 406.3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Anterior Pituitary, Pars Intermedia, Herring Bodies
Document Summary
*the lecture will cover pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreatic islets and adrenals. The ovary and testis also have endocrine functions. We have already covered enteroendocrine cells of the gut and pineal. Endocrine system make hormones that are secreted into the bloodstream: Pars intermedia = between pars nervosa and pars distalis: row of cells just beside the intercellular cleft, basophils = secretes melanocyte secreting hormone, colloid follicles. Infundibulum elongates: hagfish = the lobes are not close to each other at all, shark, fish = the two lobes are pretty close together, frog = the two lobes are pretty close together, turtle, chicken, rodent, man. Although the gross structure varies the hormones are ancient. Many animals (e. g. fish and shark) have the same hormones but are produced by different tissues. In 1971, scientists would extract insulin from hagfish and inject it to humans.
