Diagnosis of SARA
-time of sampling:
oTMR fed once a day then take sample 5-8 hours after feeding
oForage and concentrate fed separately then take sample 2-5 hours after concentrate
-Sample 10 cows per group
-If >30% have pH< 5.5 then you consider whole group as affected
How to prevent SARA
-Avoid abrupt introduction of readily fermentable carbohydrates
oIncrease concentrate over 5 to 7 day intervals
oIntroduce concentrate during close-up dry period
-Allow adaptation time for rumen wall (papilli) and microbes
-Have a proper ration formulation
o27-30% NDF
o70-80% supplied from forage
odo not exceed 35-40% NFC
-use dietary buffers
o0.75% Na bicarbonate
-avoid over mixing or over processing TMR
othis reduced particle size and peNDF content
-minimize sorting of TMR in feed bunk
opushing up feed
o50% moisture
-allow adequate bunk space
othis avoids over-consumption of concentrate
othis is less of a concern with TMR because should have feed all the time
otimid cows way over consume food because they don’t know when they will get back to
the feed bunk
-meet peNDF requirements
oADF and NDF do not account for particle size differences
oAdequate peNDF stimulates chewing and rumination
oIncreased saliva production will cause increase buffers in rumen
Penn state particle separator (PSPS)
-Determines particle size distribution
-Separates into 3 fractions
o>19mm (6-10$ of TMR retained)
obetween 19-8mm (30-50% of TMR)
o<8 mm (40-60% of TMR)
-switched last screen from 1.18mm to 4mm
obut found that this did not show any relationship with peNDF
oso have now removed this and replaced with 4mm screen
othis screen is based and stat with dairy cows that 4mm or less particle size can flow out
of the rumen
