ANSC 460.3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Short Ribs, Adipose Tissue, Ketosis
Body condition score:
-visual observation
-palpation
orump area (hip bones, pinbones, tailhead)
-amount of fat cover over vertebra
-have 2 people score independently and take mean BCS
typical system use scale 1-5
-1 = emaciated
-2= thin
-3= average
-4= fat
-5= obese
subjective assessment ( 50-60% chance of giving the same score twice)
Body conditioning score of 1
-deep cavity around tailhead
-bones of pelvis, short ribs sharp, easy felt
-emaciated
-issues: no receives for negative energy balance when calving so will loose milk, fertility will be
low, takes long time for them to start cycling after they calve
Body conditioning score of 5
-tailhead , short ribs buried in thick layer of fatty tissue
-pelvic bones not felt with firm pressure
-obese
-calving problems, end up with retained placentas which can delay fertility resumption
-ketosis and general metabolic diseases because mobilizing adipose tissue excessively because
DMI is depressed because fat cells produce leptin (negative feedback on DMI)
