Document Summary

Rough er: many ribosomes attached on its outer surface, proteins made on ribosomes enter the er lumen, where they fold into their final form. Rough er and smooth er work together and are connected as part of the same network. Transported via vesicles to the er: to a lysosome in animal cells or to a vacuole in plant cells. To the exterior of the cell by exocytosis: the golgi complex tags proteins for sorting to their final destinations. Proteins to be secreted from the cell are transported to the membrane in secretory vesicles which release their contents to the exterior by exocytosis. The membrane of the vesicle fuses with the plasma membrane and becomes part of the plasma membrane. Ph within lysosomes is acidic (ph ~ 5), significantly lower than the ph of the cytosol (ph ~ 7. 2) lowered by an active membrane proton (h+ ) pump.
