Document Summary

Topic 11: extracellular matrix, and cell- cell interactions. Bmsc 220. 3 cell biology. Textbook readings (5th edition: chapter 14, pages 577- 596. Cell- cell interactions: adhesion junctions, tight junctions, gap junctions: system, plasmodesmata: Form straight fibrils and fibres, as well as networks. This is the characteristic structure of collagen. Basic structure of collagen and amino acid sequence. Fibronectin is the principal adhesion protein of connective tissues, whereas laminin is the principal adhesion protein of the basal lamina. Laminin is the principal adhesion protein of the basal lamina. Laminin essentially contains domains that allow it to bind to itself, cells, collagen, and proteoglycans. Similar to fibronectin, laminin has cell binding, collagen binding, and proteoglycan binding properties. Therefore, it is the glue that holds the ecm together. Integrins are the major cell surface proteins responsible for the attachment of cells to the extracellular matrix. Types of cell- matrix interactions involving integrins. Integrins link the extracellular matrix directly to the cytoskeleton.
