Document Summary

Naturally occurring water is never "pure" h2o due to: Solvent effect dissolution of minerals and other compounds. Suspension of solids erosion, turbulence, turn over. Pollutant input from human activities industry, agriculture, municipal wastes, etc. Assessment of water quality really deals with dilute aqueous solutions and suspensions of materials not pure water. Water chemistry is the interactions and effects of the dissolved and suspended materials in the water. The vast majority of the earth"s naturally occurring water is highly mineralized and/or unavailable (see env. The combined effect of natural processes and water use for human activities is an increase in the mineral and organic content of the water as it flows downstream to the oceans. Water quality (i. e. the mineral and organic content) is a major issue when assessing a potential water source. Required water quality must consider intended water use. Civil engineers have traditionally been concerned with design of treatment facilities for domestic water supply and wastewater treatment.
