Document Summary

Fear and dislike that is how some students might describe their reaction to poetry. Other students love poetry: writing it, listening to it, playing with it. Whatever your response to poetry, you need to remember that poetry, like other literary forms, provides you with a writer"s response to the same kinds of subjects that interest you. We will be treating poetry as we have treated other genres, by analyzing what the poems mean and how they reveal that meaning. We will be looking at the ideas and themes contained within a number of poems, as well as their technical elements. Elements such as stanza structure, rhyme scheme and rhythm, internal rhyme, alliteration, assonance, consonance, imagery, similes, metaphors, and symbols can help us to understand how the poem makes itself meaningful. You will need to familiarize or re-familiarize yourself with the definitions of these terms.
