GEOG 120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Arctic Circle, Fot, Declination
Document Summary
Imperfect sphere: polar circumference = 40,008 km, equatorial circumference = 40,075 km. Movement- the earth moves in two concurrent motions. Rotation- provides an axis with poles. Orbital revolution- an elliptical path around the sun, on the plane of ecliptic or ecliptic plane . The earth- sun distance varies between aphelion and perihelion points aphelion- furthest away (study technique: away, aphelion) perihelion- closest proximity (proximity, perihelion) Axial rotation- ends of rotational axis anchor the geographic grid. Coriolis effect - is a deflection of moving objects when they are viewed in a rotating reference frame. Ie. deflection of wind and flowing water. Deformation of the solid earth . Ie. flattening of earth at poles. Ie. bulging of earth at equator. Meridians- define degrees longitude relative to the prime meridian (run n- s) Parallels- define degrees latitude relative to the equator (run e- w) Each place has a distinct location in this geographic grid.
