Practice question
Which of the following is the most correct statement about theory?
1. It predicts phenomena
2. It explains phenomena
3. It explains and predicts phenomena
4. It only has a limited use in sport settings
Social Influence in Action
-Changing behavior, thoughts, feelings.
-When somebody else influences the way you feel, what you do; social influence has
occurred.
When playing a game
-Have a crowd watching. Social influence comes into play.
-We always see social influence in action
When we are performing, others are influencing us.
This idea goes back to the 1890s by norman Triplett.
-Presence of others “served to liberate latent energy not ordinarily available” - Triplett
explanation of why people perform better with others.
-He was a competitive bike rider and a scientist.
-He saw that riders would go faster when there were other people with them than when
they were riding alone.
-He did a study; they were to ride this course for their best time. Two situations, one
where they were by themselves then one where they are with others.
-Those who rode with others, their time was better.
-But others after him did this study where they found the opposite of his study.
Zajonc’s (1965) contribution
-Explained previous inconsistencies.
-Provided a theoretical explanation for “mere presence”

Document Summary
It only has a limited use in sport settings. When somebody else influences the way you feel, what you do; social influence has occurred. We always see social influence in action. When we are performing, others are influencing us. This idea goes back to the 1890s by norman triplett. Presence of others served to liberate latent energy not ordinarily available - triplett explanation of why people perform better with others. He was a competitive bike rider and a scientist. He saw that riders would go faster when there were other people with them than when they were riding alone. He did a study; they were to ride this course for their best time. Two situations, one where they were by themselves then one where they are with others. Those who rode with others, their time was better. But others after him did this study where they found the opposite of his study.
