Document Summary
Cellular regulation of the immune response, and its. Contents: introduction, the role and charactertistics of different kinds of. The early and continuous presence of self antigens. The next few sessions will cover various aspects of how cells act and interact to regulate the induction and expression of immunity. It was believed, until 1968, that the mere binding of antigen to the receptors on lymphocytes led to their induction. Lymphocytes were believed to be the immunocompetent cells. The transfer of such cells from sensitized individuals, able to mount a secondary response, to normal syngeneic recipients, allowed the recipients to respond to the antigen in a secondary manner. Lymphocytes were thus shown to carry immunological memory. Observations made since 1968 have revealed that antigen mediates complex interactions between leucocytes. It was first shown that the induction of particular subclasses of lymphocyte requires other specific lymphocytes.
