NURS 205 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Health Technology Assessment, Confirmation Bias, Systematic Review
Document Summary
Research skepticism and intro to research method and designs. We need to have a healthy dose of skepticism when reading published articles: only 6. 8% of published research is of high quality and is truly clinically relevant mckibbon et al (2004). They don"t always contain the full truth: the number of retracted articles has risen by 45% over the past decade, with the greatest increase among those retracted due to general research misconduct. Although research method errors account for the main reason, many retractions were a consequence of deliberate attempts by an author to deceive and gain professional credibility. Mmr vaccine and autism was retracted from a very qualified journal (the lancet) because the research did not contain valid information: critical appraisal. There were only 12 children included in this study all from a single gastroenterologist clinic. This was only ever intended to be a case report - observational research. Study was never intended or designed to demonstrate causality.
