Document Summary

Physiology: the study of the normal functioning of a living organism and its component parts, including all its chemical and physical processes (cid:862)k(cid:374)o(cid:449)ledge of (cid:374)ature(cid:863) Physiology is an integrative science -closely tied to anatomy: the structure of a cell, tissue, or organ must provide a physical base for its function. Emergent properties: properties of a complex system that cannot be explained by knowledge of a syste(cid:373)"s i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual co(cid:373)po(cid:374)e(cid:374)ts. Result from complex, nonlinear interactions of the systems different components: ex: emotion or intelligence in humans cannot be predicted from knowing the individual properties of nerve cells, the human genome project. Cells: smallest unit of structure capable of carrying out life processes. Tissue: collection of cells carrying out related functions. Organ: formation of tissues into a structural and functional unit. Specialized cell types: epithelial, connective tissue, neuron, muscle tissues . Organ (kidney) functional unit nephron organ system (urinary system) The more metabolically active the membrane is the more protein it contains.
