Theories of the Nature + Emergence of Emotion
Discrete emotions theory
- Born w/basic emotions that undergo devel’ change

The functionalist approach
- Emotions function to promote actions towards achieving a goal in a given context

Emergence of Emotion

Positive Emotions
- Smiling is first clear sign of happiness.
- Meaning of infant smiles appears to change with age.
- Humans are more likely to make infants smile
- 6-7 weeks: Social smiles are directed toward people.
- 2 months: happiness from social and non-social contexts
- 3 or 4 months: laugh & smile at a variety of activities.
- 7 months: smile primarily at familiar people
- 1st year: Unexpected events are enjoyable
- 2nd year: joy in making others laugh
