PSY 216 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Ageism, Social Cognition, Baby Talk
Document Summary
Scripted knowledge: everyday activities, what people should do and how we feel. Socialized: to adhere to and believe in social rules, or how to behave in specific social situations. Positive expectations about aging coexist with the negative ones. The consensus on stereotype categories across age group is accompanied by developmental changes in the complexity of age stereotype beliefs. Older adults identified a great number of desirable and undesirable traits that characterize people as they develop across the lifespan. They perceive a greater potential for change in these characteristics in older age. As we grow older, our ideas and age stereotypes become more elaborated and rich as we integrate our life experiences into our beliefs about aging. We make appraisals or attributions of older adults" competence when we observe them perform tasks, and we assess whether we can count on them to perform important tasks.
