SLSC 398 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Termite, Excavata, Aerotolerant Anaerobe
Document Summary
They are unicellular eukaryotes, who are very diverse. They from in di erent ways, they can form laments, or colonies, or a at sheet of cells. They have a cytoskeleton which is responsible for moving things around in the cell and cell shape. Cell shape if important for feeding, if it changes it can feed or there will be mutations. Folding of protein happens in the goldi- dictyosome. The contractile vacuoles are tiny vesicles that become full of waters and ions and they merge together to make larger ones. When they are large enough they release the content through the cell membrane to the outside. It functions like kidney, gets rid of excess water, wastes, and salts. In fresh water the cells have a concentrated cytoplasm and the water will rush into it and the cell will explode if the contractile vacuole isn"t working. Fresh water species has much better and larger contractile vacuoles.
