STAT 245.3 – Exercises #1
Solutions
PROBLEM: The data given on the next page represent annual incomes in thousands of dollars
(to the nearest hundred dollars) of the 250 employees of a large local company. The data is
presented in 10 columns of 25 values per column.
1. Number the data column-wise from 001 to 250. You must be able to identify the number
assigned to each entry.
2. Use the Table of 300 3-digit Random Numbers to generate a simple random sample without
replacement of the incomes of 20 employees of this company. You can download this
table from Course Materials in the Stat 245 course on Blackboard. Use the table as follows.
Starting at Line 1, Column 1, read the 3-digit random numbers from top to bottom of the column,
selecting acceptable numbers. If you do not obtain 20 acceptable 3-digit random numbers,
move to the second block of random numbers i.e. Column 2 and repeat the process. Remember
that repeated numbers are not acceptable.
