The basic living, structural and functional unit of our body. Each cell arises from an existing cell by cell division. Cell biology - the study of cellular structure and function. Cytoplasm: consists of all the cellular contents between the plasma membrane and the nucleus. Acts as the control center for a cell because it contains the genes, which control cellular structure and most cellular activities. Surrounds and contains the cytoplasm of a cell; composed of proteins and lipids. Lipid bilayer consists of two tail-to-tail layers of phospholipids, cholesterol, and glycolipids. Integral proteins extend into or through the lipid bilayer. Ion channels are used to transport substances in and out of the cell. Carriers allow substances to enter the cell by changing shape. Receptors recognize specific molecules used for specific functions. Peripheral proteins associate with the inner or outer surface of the membrane. Lie on the top of or just within the plasma membrane.
