Document Summary

A group of similar cells joined together to form a common function. Lines hollow organs, body cavities/ducts, and forms glands. Can being organs together, store energy as fat, and provide immunity to disease. Contains cells specialized for contraction and force generation. Detects changes in external and internal environments; responds via nerve impulses to activate muscular contractions and glandular secretions. General types of epithelial tissues include covering and lining epithelium and glandular epithelium. Consists mostly of cells with little extracellular material. Attached to connective tissue via a basement membrane. Simple epithelium is a single layer of cells. Involved in diffusion, osmosis, filtration, secretion, and absorption. Pseudostratified epithelium looks like it may contain many layers, but there"s actually only one. The odd shape of the cells make it appear that there are many layers. Stratified epithelium contains 2 or more layers of cells. Located in areas of high wear and tear.
