Document Summary

Biol 130 lecture 1- unit 1 introduction to the cell. 1830s: the compound microscope increases resolution and magnification by having 2 lenses, now able to see the internal structure of cells, allowed visualisation of objects less than 1 m. Cell theory: all organisms consist of one or more cells, the cells is the basic unit of structure for all organisms. 20 years later it was added that all cells arise from pre-existing cells. Why is this only a theory? in science, theory carries weight. Facts and the scientific method a scientific fact is based on observations and experiments an attempt to state our current best understanding valid until replaced by better facts with more careful observation and experimentation. The scientific method: make observations put forward a hypothesis based on these observations, make predictions based on the hypothesis further testing and observation of hypothesis adds strength to it interpret results to see if hypothesis is true.
