BIOL211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Adrenal Gland, Elastin, Dentin
Document Summary
Vertebrata (vertebrates) are a sub-phylum of the animal phylum chordata . The notochord is a turgid, vascularized supportive structure surrounded by sheaths of connective tissues. Vertebrates are the largest sub-phylum of chordates. Have a brain (cephalization) surrounded by a cranium (or braincase) Hollow dorsal nerve cord above notochord, with anterior brain adjacent to 3 special sense organs (eyes, nasal epithelium & labyrinth) cephalization . Vertebrates are mobile, active animals have differentiated anterior/posterior and dorsal/ventral regions. Left & right are (approximate) mirror images but there is asymmetry within the body. Anterior mouth, complete gut, post-anal tail, gill slits in the anterior part of gut or pharynx. Mouth at the front leads to a digestive tube which is complete ( has second opening so flow is one way) Post-anal tail extending beyond the gut region. Coelom (around gut, heart, and lungs if present) Vertebrates are coelomate an internal space (coelom) to house the internal organs.
