BIOL355 Lecture Notes - Lecture 31: Endothelium, Low-Density Lipoprotein, Chemokine
Document Summary
Ldls truck it from liver and intestines to various tissues, which uses it to repair membranes or produce steroid hormones. Hdls haul cholesterol to the liver for excretion or recycling. Excess ldl promotes the condition of atherosclerosis by accumulating on vessel walls. It accumulates within vessel walls where its components become oxidized and altered in other ways. This causes it to incite an inflammatory response that dangerously alters arteries. Hdls removes cholesterol from arteries and can also combat atherosclerosis with anti- inflammatory action. Starts as a small tear or injury to intima. At reasonable concentration ldl can pass in and out of intima and back to lumen. In excess ldl becomes stuck under intima surface. It accumulates, lipids and proteins of ldl become oxidized and form age products also causing them to get trapped. When oxidized ldl gets trapped under intima, cells treat like a wound response (danger) It t(cid:396)a(cid:374)spo(cid:396)ts 75% of the (cid:271)loods (cid:272)holeste(cid:396)ol to the (cid:271)od(cid:455)"s (cid:272)ells.
