Document Summary

When it is too cold, hair muscles pull hairs and make them erect. These erect hairs trap air causing the blood flow in capillaries to decreases. However, with aging, the is a loss of hair, so there is not enough hair to trap air. Surface skin is too thin to retain heat, which means that the heat loss out of the body increases. Loss of subcutaneous fat leads to less shivering to retain heat. This results in inefficient vasoconstriction: too hot. When it is too hot, hair muscles relax causing the hairs to lie flat. Sweat secreted by sweat glands cools skin by evaporation causing blood flow in capillaries to increase. However, with aging, there is a loss of sweat glands, so it cannot secrete as much sweat to cool skin. Decrease in blood vessels and blood flow results in decreased heat loss.
