Document Summary

Why do we need statistical calculations: extrapolate results from a limited sample to a larger group (ex. The world: knowing if results are due to random variation or expected drug (for example) Sample to population: there is no sample population ! there is a sample, and there is a population, but they are 2 different things, quality control: ex. Descriptive vs. inferential: descriptive statistics: summarizing, figuring out the main features. Inferential statistics: techniques that allow us to make inferences and conclusions. Lecture 2: quantitative data, continuous variables: there can be decimal places in between values (ex. length, discrete: fixed integers; counts of things (ex. # legs on an insect: ordinal level of measurement difference in ability between rank 1 & 2 is not the same as between 50 and 51 when ranking basketball players for example. 0 cm means no distance, but 0 degrees does not mean no heat! Therefore, temp is an example of interval level of measurement.
