BIOL373 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Vasodilation, Sympathetic Nervous System, Pulmonary Artery
Document Summary
Capillaries microscopic vessels where blood exchanges material with the interstitial fluid. Blood picks up oxygen at lungs and nutrients in the intestine and then delivers it to bodys cells while simultaneously removing cellular wastes and heat for excretion. Primary function is transport materials to and from all parts of body: divided into nutrients, water and gasses that enter from external env, materials that move from cell to cell within body, wastes that cell eliminates. Oxygen enters body at exchange surface from lungs, nutrients and water absorbed across intestinal epithelium. Neurons in the brain have very high oxygen consumption, cannot be stopped. 5-10 seconds of no oxygen = faints, 5-10 minutes of no oxygen = permanent brain damage. Cell to cell = important as blood carries nutrients and white blood cells and antibodies to help patrol circulation. Metabolic wastes are transported to lungs (co2) and kidneys for excretion. Cardiovascular system = composed of blood, blood vessels and heart.
