CHEM120L Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Manivannan, Organic Synthesis, Tylenol (Brand)
Document Summary
The purpose of this investigation was to synthesize acetaminophen by producing a crude and a purified sample. To do this experiment, a process of recrystallization which is a process of purifying solid component of a sample. (yang, m. et. al, 2010) and the melting point analysis was used to identify the purity of the substance. Acetaminophen which is a powerful painkiller and is used by people around the world and is more commonly known as tylenol and is known to be in more then 600 different medications. (canada, 2018). The medication is synthesized when the amine group to p-aminophenol is acetylated using acetic anhydride to create an amide functional group. Through the chemical reaction it is evident the by product of this reaction is acetic acid. This process produces a crude product and in order to be purified it must be recrystallized. Recrystallization entails the dissolving of a solid and then causing it to crystallize from the solution.
