Most religious rituals are done at the hearth. Important in greek and rome in terms of religion. Hestia was like the town square"s hearth where all the town"s rituals are done. Doesn"t really do much, just a virgin goddess. Respected and introverted god of the underworld. Needed a divine wife, so he takes persephone from the earth and brings. God of the sea, associated with horses, god of fishermen her to the underworld. Can"t punish zeus, so she punishes zeus" desires instead. Associated with a large bird of prey and his thunderbolt. Upholds the rights and duties of guests and hosts. Lead to people tracing their lineage back to zeus. Has supreme power, but in some contexts is overpowered by the other gods into doing stupid things. Has the ability to intervene and stop fate but often doesn"t. Athena was prefered over ares to the greeks. Gets injured by diomedes at the trojan war.
