Maybe due to being the god of the sea. Tries to keep odysseus from going home. Nobody wants him as their main patron god. Athena and poseidon fight for being the patron of athena. People believed the sea extended under the land, so he was responsible. People would burn them because poseidon liked the smell. Typically portrayed in iconography with a 4 horse chariot. Hades has stolen persephone and demeter is looking for her. Poseidon sees demeter and conceives a lust for her . Demeter turns herself into a female horse. Poseidon loves this so he turns into a stallion and mates with her. They give birth to a divine horse. In mycenaean time poseidon was a main god for some cities. Always loses contests to become the main god. Another version says he gives a horse. Nobody wanted him as their patron god. Doesn"t really do anything except have children. Parents of the oceanids and the rivers.
