Two main sections: hardware, software and operating systems (os) Hardware physical equipment and devices that a computer is made of. Three primary categories of hardware components: the cpu, primary memory and secondary storage, peripherals. The brain of any computer: performs most of the computing . The magic of cpu is twofold: a lot can be accomplished with those few basic operations, and, cpus are really really fast. Each cpu has its own machine language that is used to give it instructions. Typically, instructions designed for one cpu will not work on another, however, many cpu manufacturers have chosen to make their machine languages compatible (intel and amd) Secondary storage the long term (permanent) storage of a computer: includes hard drives, lash drives, cds, dvds, magnetic tapes and loppy disks. Inside a hd are several magnetic disk (platters) that can store a lot of information in a tight space. Flash drives are becoming increasingly popular as secondary storage devices.
