EARTH232 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Eyepiece, Polarizer, Conoscopy
Document Summary
We will be using axio lab. a1 microscopes that have been built specifically for our needs to learn how to identify minerals and textures in thin section. Make sure to follow these steps before moving/carrying your scope: make sure the blue dust cover is removed before your lift/move your scope. Always use two hands to lift/move your microscope. Base/stand (3): the microscope base, or stand, provides a good sturdy base for the entire microscope. It should rest firmly on the lab bench. Lamp: all of the microscopes in this laboratory have a lamp built into the base. The light is directed upward with a combination of lenses and mirrors. The light intensity is adjusted with a light intensity control on the right side of the microscope stage (6). Focusing knob (7, 8): just above the base of the microscope is an adjustment knob which raises and lowers the microscope stage and will focus your thin section.
