(cultural, professional, storytelling, etc. ) Conventions of the short story: brevity (of subject matter; economy of language; concise ideas, single focus, fragment of reality (implies more than itself, unity of effect (poe) In media res (in the middle of things) Edgar allen poe: short story is the highest form of prose. Dramatic structure: the way the story is told & the way we respond to the story (how our emotional involvement with a story is increased, and relaxed)
