The universality of the hermeneutical problem notes (gadamer) The aesthetic consciousness is always secondary to the truth-claim that proceeds from the work of art itself. This alienation into aesthetic judgement takes place when we have withdrawn ourselves and are no longer open to the immediate claim of that which grasps us. In the historical consciousness, there is a contradiction between the historical distancing and the immediate will to shape things that always cleaves to the present. There are serious problems in its claim to historical objectivity. Hermeneutics: the art of avoiding misunderstanding (schleiermacher; 7). Our task is to transcend the prejudices that underlie the aesthetic and historical consciousness, and to not restrict the hermeneutical consciousness to simply avoiding misunderstandings. How can we legitimate the hermeneutical conditionedness of our being in the face of modern science, which promotes complete objectivity? (10) The power of hermeneutical consciousness is our ability to see what is questionable (13).
