ENGL292 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Closing Argument, Edmund Burke, Kairos
Document Summary
Engl 292 justice delayed, but not denied. No longer about race but instead about justice. Last opportunity to convince jury that their side of the case is the right one. Narrative of what happened gets fragmented into little tiny bits. Never a chance for lawyers to make a story of it "til the end. Without narrative, jurors go into deliberation and make their own stories. Jury member know the two lawyers, gotten to know them, have established ethos with the jury. More pathos to the story that"s being told. Lot of other things that need to come into a closing argument. Have to remind what the evidence is and who gave it. Jury doesn"t know the lawyers yet, so they can"t do as much pushing. Not just closure for the family but for the justice in mississippi. Jurors have something to hang the evidence on. Jury is given a theme, process the evidence with the understanding of that theme.
