Different types of law are used to regulate environment tort law, criminal law, etc. We need to link principles to rules to actually make it law. Air/water pollution, contaminated land, habitat destruction/loss of biodiversity, over consumption of natural resources, ozone depletion, climate change, toxic chemicals. Canada"s not doing well with air pollution (sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxide, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide), water consumption, energy use (poor consumption and efficiency) Doing well with municipal sewage treatment, and good with biodiversity. 76% (45% strongly agree, 32% somewhat agree) of canadians believe that given climate concerns, we should be moving away from a dependence on fossil fuels towards cleaner energy. Tragedy of the commons: finite resource, open access, unless we do something about this, we will definitely degrade our environment, we can prevent the tragedy by: Allocation problems: who bears the costs, environmental justice issues. Scientific uncertainty/risk analysis: debate on whether something needs to be dealt with or not.
