Involves complex systems, cumulative effects, strategic level application, precaution, sustainability- based decision criteria. It is facing pressures for quick, positive decisions. It has parallels in related activities (e. g. urban and regional planning, especially in growth management). Applications beyond legal obligation: corporate social and environmental sustainability, new governance initiatives (inter-jurisdictional and multi-party) Much of environmental assessment deals with evaluating individual projects and proposals. There is an entrenched dependence on wobbly but globalized economic structure that is built on broadly unsustainable foundations. It needed transition apparently beyond capacities of national governments and conventional market functions. Consequently, the emergence of emphasis on local to global governance initiatives, and of diversely innovative experiments that respect sustainability and complexity imperatives. Sustainability assessment is only one venue - there are so many other areas that impact/are impacts by the trends of the wellbeing of the planet.
