It was the biggest war and world wide so there is a lot of commemoration. Began the push for commemoration for the soldiers. Put in every town because every town lost someone. Proud of their achievements in the war - nationalism. Towns, education institutions and businesses all elect memorials. Generic (poilu) soldier is used in france (prominent gure from war) Given name tags/dog tags later in the war. When they died, their identity died, and sometimes their body disappeared. When they died, they took the name tag off, but then the bodies became unidenti able. Then they gave them 2 name tags; one to stay with the body, and one with the family. Concept of unknown soldier began in britain. Westminster abbey - unknown soldier memorial is there because the soldier should be among kings.
