It is unclear when history stops and myth begins. Included figures from the divine world disguised as ordinary people. This is the earliest relief that can be taken to represent historical rome (and its in greece) We can date this relief to about 168bc. Dedicated to amelius paulus after his victory over the macedonians in the battle of pydna. Battle began with riderless horse charging toward the greek army therfore the horse is prominent. Plain background: the four pompeian wall painting styles. This categorization has fallen out of favour because many other paintings have been found outside the region and dating to earlier. First style: imitates stone masonry -- painted plaster to look like marble. Starts in pompeii in 2nd century but we have examples dating further back in greece. No marble in italy, all marble was imported from greece. Second style: a) architectural scenes b) mythological scenes. Imitating views or vistas that we can"t afford.
