Document Summary
Art and architecture under hadrian ( trajan"s second cousin --chosen to be the emperor) Not the first to look to classical greece, but takes it to the next level. Hadrian was a lover (if touchy) not a fighter. Antinoos - the (insert cute boy of the moment here) of ancient rom. First roman portrait with beard --other than some faint mutton chops on. Reinforces that hadrian is the lover of all things greek. Hair is large and very curly -- now exploring chiaroscuro effects in a lot more material and more kinds of material -- shows technical virtuosity and lighting effects. Not a lot of individual strands of hair. Carved in clumps -- plays into notions of abstraction, as long as the viewer understands the visual information. Moving from compositional abstraction (scale) to formal techniques of abstraction. Uses bridges to connect clumps of curls -- visual shorthand. The pupils are carved out rather than painted.
