Principle: if something is complicated, it"s less likely to be used. Users should never have to ask questions: do not add to their cognitive load. Usability is about people and how they understand things, not about technology. Why is usability important: on the web, users should find info and navigation easy. If they get lost/confused, they leave: if users cannot find the product, they can"t buy it! Usability heuristics: means to discover, describes an approach to learning, evaluation: Is the engineering methods t finding problems in a user interface design. Most sites follow a mental model , eg. most online shopping places have a shopping cart in the top right corner: user control and freedom. Users choose system functions by mistake and will need a emergency exit to leave support the undo and redo: consistency and standards. Users should not have to wonder what different words/actions mean. Better than error messages: prevent an error from happening.
