GEOG222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Woolly Mammoth, Dorset Culture, Thule People
Document Summary
Glaciers melting = bridge between siberia, beringia, north america. Wooly mammoth ventures across to north america, followed by people. Genetic similarity between people located in alaska/yukon, and those in siberia because glacier trapped population in one area at a point in time. Sea route theory: descendants of old world hunters took boat down western seaboard when ice melted, ending up in british columbia. Spring of 2017 archeologists traced remains back. 14,000 years ago to sea folk that support sea route theory. Corridor theory: people migrated over land as ice retreated. Paleo-indians: distinguished into 3 groups - clovis, folsom, plano culture. As environment (temperature, vegetation, animals) changes, culture changes and a new culture is formed. Characterized by spearheads (found throughout canada and us). Characterized by smaller heads on thrusted spears (short distance attack). Plano: glaciers retreating, very large plains area and boreal forest. Northern migrations: migration facilitated by ice retreat and tool development.
