GEOG281 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Transverse Mercator Projection, Lambert Conformal Conic Projection, Nicolas Auguste Tissot
Document Summary
Peel and laten the earth like an orange peel: map projecions are an important aspect of all mapping. All maps require the transformaion of the surface of the spherical earth to a lat surface. Cartesian coordinates can be used directly to calculate distance between two points. Distance deined in a straight line from point (x1,y1) to point (x2,y2): D2 = (x1 - x2)2 + (y1 - y2)2. All projecions can be represented by mathemaical equaions. Informaion about the projecion parameters is required to deine a country"s spaial reference system. It is impossible to represent all geometric relaionships among locaions on the earth"s surface accurately on a lat 2-d map. Imagine small circle centered on surface of the earth, and consider its shape ater transformed by given map projecion. Illustrate linear, angular, and area distorions of maps: properies of map projecions. All direcions on the map are the same as on earth. The shape of any area is correctly represented.
