Safety focuses on accidents resuling from acute condiion or events. 1800s: public accepted accidents as inevitable and thus litle emphasis placed on protecing workers. 1900s: workers compensaion laws introduced in montana, new york-deemed unconsituional. Age and gender: accident rate highest for those aged 15-24, peaks around age 25. Job experience: 70% occur within irst 3 years on the job. Stress, faigue, drugs, alcohol: include loss of loved one or divorces, job dissaisfacion and depression. Mechanical hazards: ranging from cuts to strains. Commission: describes an operator who does something that should not have been done ( intended: mistake or intended :slip) Omission: describes an operator who fails to do something that should have been done (lapse) Can"t eliminate all risk from all jobs, so some decisions necessarily are made by workers.
