1983-discovery of hiv, a retrovirus that causes aids. Originated from non-human primates in west-central africa. Mucosal surfaces are used as a point of entry into the host. Cd4+ t cells: resting (inactive) or activated memory t cells. Macrophages: first cell that is infected by hiv and main target when cd4+ t cells count can infect many different epithelial cell types including the cells of the immune system is low. Microglial cells: resident macrophages of the brain and spinal cord. Dendritic cells: apcs such as dcs are used to spread the infection to t cells. Sexual secretions from genitals (oral, rectal or vaginal) transmission from male to female is greater. Latex condoms reduce transmission by 85% circumcision reduces by 55% During pregnancy, childbirth or breast feeding caesarean reduces and antiretroviral drug. Symptoms: more infections during 2-4 weeks period fever. Myalgia sores in the mouth and esophagus nausea vomiting rash. Chronic infection high incidence of latent infection in cd4+ t cells.
