Nation and state are different: nation group of people, state is gov"t ruling the people. Country"s 4 essential components: territory (natural resources, population (people, state (government, culture (high & low, 3 exceptions: antarctica, oceans, and atmospheric near-space, google pacific garbage island . Way of life: high and low. Shakespeare, tchaikovsky, mozart, taj mahal: what we put in museums, model of very best. Low (quality: common and widespread, what we actually eat/drink, music, technology. Global digital divide: 5 billion never used cellphone, internet. Make the rules (legislation), enforce them (executive power e. g. cops, military) Defend society from domestic criminals & foreign invaders. Decide war & peace; economic & social policies; build infrastructure; respond to public. Represent the society to the rest of the world emergencies: huge impact on our lives. Churches/religious orgs: terrorist groups, insurgent forces, private militias, pmcs/mercenaries.
