Meeting the Nutritional Needs of the older Adult Population 10/29/2012 3:40:00 PM Nutritionist- improving health, not curing diseases  Diabetes prevent/helped by exercise/diet Some Facts: In 2056, 1 in 3 will be working with Elderly Quantum Health Expectancy Theory  Certain quantity of life at birth o Genetics, parental health, fatal health  Environmental assaults o Erode the quantum can erode by drinking, smoking, living around toxins  Healthful behaviours o Support the quantum can support by exercising, having a good diet, not living around any toxins Centenarians  85% women  90% functionally independent at 90 years of age o Living because of healthier lifestyles (approx 70%): non- obese, non-smokers o Living because of Genetics (approx 30%) Good Nutrition is Vital to Aging Well Problem with aging nowadays:  Low quality diet is common  Increased sedentary lifestyle  Older adults need more nutrition/volume  Older adults have less „reserve‟ to play with o older adults can’t deal as well with changing diets Poor food intake:  Low nutrients/vitamins  Lack of consuming food group needs Why Poor Food intake occurs?  Poor ampathy  Depression With aging we move less…  Begin to lose lean body muscle in 30‟s and 40‟s o Approx 1%/year  Decreased physical activity  Unintentional weight gain  Unintentional weight loss Recommendations for nutrient intake:  Increased need with age for B6  Increased B12 and folate for adults  Increased required nutrients for Calcium, Protein, Vitamin D, Vitamin E What‟s the Big deal?  Nutrition predicts o Mortality o
