Lecture 5 – Measurement Scales Levels of Measurement • Nominal scale: o For categories o No magnitude o No additivity • Can code the data with numbers (ie. 1=male, 2=female, no mathematical  meaning) • Frequencies within category are the ONLY meaningful approach to quantifying • Ordinal Scale o Also for categories, but those ascribed diff relative values o Rank ordered, but not additive o No assumptions about equal increments  Ie. Whiplash Associated Disorders scales: • Grade 0 = no pain or discomfort • Grade 1 = neck pain…no physical signs of injury • Grade 2 = neck pain, some signs of physical inury • …Grady 4 = pain, fracture
