Lecture 17 - Observational Research Cont.
Any research that involves examining associations among variables, but without
manipulation of those variables
Intent can be:
oDescriptive
oExploratory
Types Include:
oCohort Studies
oCase Control Studies
Exploratory – looking at relationship between two or more variables
Data Type
oProspective
oMeasurement at BASELINE AND FOLLOWUPS
oParticipants are followed FORWARD in time
oInvestigator HAS CONTROL over operational definitions and
measurement
oData quality much higher in this type of study
oMore reliable, and better causal inference potential (though still limited)
because we have covariance and temporal precedence
oRetrospective
oMeasurement at one time point and PRIOR TO
oParticipants are followed BACKWARD in time
oInvestigator does NOT have control of operational definitions and
measurements
oCovariance, but NO temporal precedence
oGraph:
oFirst blue bar = WW1, Second blue bar = WW2
Case Control Studies
o2 step process
oIdentify cases
Lung cancer patient vs control (matching cases with experimental
group with only ONE DIFFERENCE; not having lung cancer)
Helps isolate smoking as the punitive cause to lung cancer
oMeasure Exposures (past)
cigarette smoking frequency
Cohort Study
oDoll et al
oStudy design & sample
oProspective design
